Alaska Project Ideas, mentored by the researchers and collaborators of University of Alaska and supported by open-source entities and enthusiasts in Alaska.
This project helps environmental scientists and coastal planners by automating the detection and mapping of coastlines from satellite images. It takes raw PlanetLabs satellite imagery as input and outputs highly accurate, vectorized coastline data. The primary users are researchers and practitioners focused on studying and mitigating coastal erosion, especially in the Arctic.
Use this if you need to rapidly process large volumes of satellite imagery to identify and track changes in coastlines for environmental monitoring or erosion modeling.
Not ideal if your primary goal is general image segmentation or if you are working with imagery resolutions significantly different from PlanetLabs data without custom model retraining.
